Men dealing with erectile dysfunction have several options for treatment. However, if no other treatment enables them to achieve an erection, a penile prosthesis is often the final solution. Vejthani International Hospital provides two types of these prostheses to help men regain erectile function.

How Does a Penile Prosthesis Function?

Penile prostheses are also known as penile implants. They require a surgical procedure to implant the prosthesis in the penis. They are considered as the last option in ED treatment. There are two types of prostheses:

1. Inflatable Prostheses

This is one of the most popular options, and they can come in single, two and three-piece implants. The inflatable penile prosthesis is surgically implanted along the length of the penis and can be inflated with an internal pump from a reservoir. The entire pump apparatus is placed in the scrotum and can be controlled externally by the individual.

2. Semi-Rigid Prostheses

A semi-rigid prosthesis consists of two silicone rods implanted alongside the urethra. The rods allow the penis to be bent away from the body during sexual intercourse and toward the body when not engaged in intercourse. They come in several diameters and are adjustable from both ends.

Purpose of Penile Prostheses

The goal of both prostheses is to give users erections and restore penile function. This could be vital for men who have erectile dysfunction and want to have children.

What is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition that prevents men from getting and maintaining an erection firm enough to engage in sexual activity. ED can be a sign of a health condition needing treatment and a risk factor for heart disease.

Many people encounter problems getting or maintaining an erection at various times. If you find yourself facing ED with growing frequency, the reasons for it can include:

  • Heart Disease
  • Clogged blood vessels (atherosclerosis)
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Tobacco use
  • Overuse of alcohol
  • Low testosterone levels

Various diseases, like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, can cause erectile dysfunction. ED can also be caused by metabolic syndrome, which is characterized by body fat around the waist, high insulin levels, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Mental health can play a role in ED as well. People having problems with their partners, under stress, or those with depression, anxiety or other mental health issues can have problems concentrating on sexual feelings.

Testing for ED

There are several treatments for ED. However, the first step is to determine the cause of your condition. Your doctor will likely recommend several tests that may include:

  • Physical examination
  • Mental health exam to screen for depression and anxiety
  • Blood tests check for heart disease, low testosterone levels, and diabetes
  • Urinalysis can also reveal diabetes and other health conditions
  • Penile duplex ultrasound of the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis

Doctor-Administered ED Treatments

In addition to these home treatments, doctor-administered ED treatments include:

  • Penile Low-intensity focused shockwave therapy (LiSWT): This ED treatment uses targeted sound waves to stimulate penile tissue and increase blood flow. The therapy has also caused the growth of new blood vessels.
  • Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT): This therapy can help restore your ability to achieve a healthy erection and boost your sex drive. It’s available in many forms – including patches, gels, injections and subcutaneous pellets inserted under the skin every 3 to 6 months.
  • Magnetic Chair Therapy: A cutting-edge, non-invasive approach that applies focused high-intensity electromagnetic energy to activate and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, including the sphincter and tissues surrounding the penis. This therapy is especially beneficial for individuals with vascular deterioration in penile tissue. It is completely painless, requires no recovery time, carries no side effects, and can be performed fully clothed. For enhanced effectiveness, it is commonly combined with Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy.
