Not Just a Simple Fall – Protect Yourself from Hip Fractures Before It’s Too Late

Health Articles

A hip fracture is a severe injury, particularly in older adults, as it can result in loss of mobility, prolonged immobility, or even life-threatening complications. Taking the following preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk:

  1. Strengthen your bones: Include calcium-rich foods such as milk, tofu, and small fish in your diet, and don’t forget to get sufficient vitamin D from morning sunlight.
  2. Stay physically active: Engage in regular exercise like walking, balance training, or yoga to build muscle strength and stability, lowering the risk of falls.
  3. Screen for bone health: Older adults and those with fragile bones should undergo a Bone Mass Density (BMD) test to evaluate the risk of osteoporosis and plan appropriate treatment and preventive care.
  4. Make your home safer: Install grab bars in the bathroom, keep walkways free from clutter, and use non-slip mats in high-risk areas.
  5. Manage chronic conditions wisely: Illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension, as well as certain medications, can increase the risk of falls and fractures. Regular checkups with your doctor are essential.

If an older adult falls and a hip fracture is suspected, seek medical attention immediately. Proper patient transfer by trained medical teams is vital to prevent further injury. In most cases, hip fractures require urgent surgery within 24 hours to reduce the risk of complications such as immobility, pressure sores, blood clots, urinary tract infections, or severe infections that can be life-threatening.
