Detect Glaucoma Early to Avoid Irreversible Blindness

Health Articles

Did You Know? Glaucoma Is One of the Leading Causes of Irreversible Blindness Worldwide Yet many people are unaware they have it — because early-stage glaucoma often shows no symptoms.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease caused by damage to the optic nerve, most commonly due to increased intraocular pressure. If left undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss.

Warning Signs of Glaucoma

  • Gradual narrowing of peripheral vision
  • Eye pain, redness, or blurry vision
  • Seeing halos or rainbow-colored rings around lights

How Is Glaucoma Diagnosed?

Diagnosis requires specialized tools used by an ophthalmologist, such as:

  • Measuring intraocular pressure
  • Examining the optic nerve and eye structure
  • Visual field testing to assess optic nerve function
  • Gonioscopy to determine the type of glaucoma

Glaucoma Treatment Options

  • Prescription eye drops
  • Laser therapy
  • Surgery to lower intraocular pressure and prevent further optic nerve damage

The earlier it’s detected, the better the outcome — early diagnosis and treatment help preserve vision.

Those over age 40, or anyone with a family history of glaucoma, are especially encouraged to have annual eye exams.

Don’t wait until symptoms become severe. Early action protects your sight.
