“Enterovirus” is a group of viruses that can cause infection, which may sometimes lead to severe illness or even death. Enterovirus 71, a particularly severe strain, can be prevented by receiving the Enterovirus 71 (EV71) vaccine. It helps prevent infection, severe complications, and fatalities.
Dr. Suravat Homvises, a specialist in Pediatrics Allergy and Immunology at Vejthani Hospital, explains that enteroviruses are common viruses with various strains. Enterovirus infections can cause symptoms ranging from mild to severe, such as hand, foot, and mouth disease, encephalitis, and myocarditis. Enteroviruses are transmitted through contact with secretions such as saliva, nasal mucus, or objects contaminated with the virus. They are most commonly found in young children under the age of 5. The symptoms of the disease depend on the type of virus, but most cases initially present with cold-like symptoms as follows:
- Fever, the most common initial symptom, which may include high fever
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Fatigue, exhaustion, and lack of energy
- Nausea and vomiting, which may be accompanied by diarrhea
- Red rash or mouth sores (especially hand, foot, and mouth disease)
Symptoms to watch out for in cases of severe infection or complications include high fever, lethargy, reduced intake of water and milk, shortness of breath or cyanosis (bluish skin).
Currently, the vaccine for preventing Enterovirus 71 infection has been researched and administered in over 48 million doses worldwide, with no severe side effects reported, ensuring its high safety. It is recommended for children aged 6 months to 5 years, requiring two intramuscular injections given one month apart.
In addition to vaccination, other preventive measures include regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with individuals suspected of infection, and disinfecting shared toys or objects. If any concerning symptoms arise—or if severe symptoms such as high fever, drowsiness, intense headache, stiff neck, difficulty walking, weakness, trouble swallowing, or breathing difficulties occur—seek immediate medical attention.
