Erectile dysfunction (ED), often referred to as “impotence,” can significantly affects a man’s quality of life and relationship with his spouse. However, what is even more concerning is that this condition may also serve as an early warning sign of underlying health conditions that often go unnoticed.
The causes of erectile dysfunction can be divided into 4 primary factors:
- Penile vascular abnormalities: This is found in about 70% of patients and is the primary cause of erectile dysfunction.
- Neurological problems: Normally, the brain sends signals to the nerves in the genital area to initiate an erection. However, when the nervous system is disrupted, the signaling process can be interrupted or weakened, affecting normal erectile function.
- Testosterone deficiency: Patients with low testosterone levels may experience other symptoms, such as low libido, incomplete erections, decreased sexual performance, and potential mood and mental health impacts.
- Psychological conditions: Psychological factors affecting sexual performance are common in patients with stress, depression, schizophrenia, or even from the side effects of psychiatric medications.
Currently, Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is used as a new treatment option for erectile dysfunction. This therapy uses shockwaves to stimulate the repair process and promote the formation of new blood vessels in the genital area, improving blood flow in the arteries.
