Many people have experienced toothache but they don’t realize that these minor symptom can actually be more serious if left untreated.

Toothache is pain in or around a tooth which may caused by a number of dental problems, such as tooth decay, wisdom tooth, tooth fracture or gum disease that could lead to infection. An untreated infection can cause serious complications for example; the bacteria in the abscesses can spread into the bloodstream, the consequences of which can be fatal.

What causes a toothache?
  • Tooth decay.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth.
  • Tooth fracture.
  • Abscessed tooth.
  • Periodontal (gum) disease.
  • Inflammation of the dental pulp (Pulpitis).
  • Tooth root infection.
  • Food debris gets stuck between teeth. It can trigger an infection.
  • Growing teeth in children.
  • Teeth grinding and jaw clenching during sleep.
  • Dental injuries as a result of an accident.
What do different types of toothache mean?
  1. Sensitivity: It is usually felt in response to a stimulus such as chewing, eating hot or cold foods, etc. It usually comes and goes. This type of pain may be caused by a decay, crack, cavity, or abscess.
  2. Aching Pain: This type of pain can occur in a tooh at any time. This can be similar to sensitivity type but the different is that it lasts for a longer duration. This is usually a sign of nerve damage to the tooth or it is likely due to inflammation inside the pulp of the tooth.
