We found that there are numerous people who still misunderstand the use of Antibiotic and how it differs from Anti-Inflammatory drugs. The misused of them cause damage on health and future issues. This article is written to enlighten those misunderstandings and confusions.

Antibiotics or Antibacterial is the group of drugs with action against bacteria.  They are indicated for the treatment of infections caused by bacteria only. The most common substances of the group are: penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, tetracycline, clindamycin and norfloxacin

Anti-Inflammatory drugs are used to treat inflammation such as pain, rash, swelling and fever which are not caused by any bacteria. The most common substances of the group are: ibuprofen, diclofenac and aspirin.

According to the information above, “Antibiotics” are only needed for treating certain infections caused by bacteria for example;

  • Pneumonia
  • Tuberculosis
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Bacteria Tonsillitis

“3 rules” to take Antibiotics correctly

  1. Do not take Antibiotics more or less than the recommended dosage.
  2. Some Antibiotics are always meant to be taken at the same time of day. You should remember the regular times for an Antibiotic that needs to be taken.
  3. You must take your Antibiotics for the duration directed by your doctor.

Please remember that Antibiotics only work against bacteria, they are not effective against viruses. The inappropriate use of Antibiotics is key factors contributing to Antibiotic resistance which has been called one of the world’s most challenging public health problems.

Antibiotic resistance occurs when the bacteria change in a way that reduces or stops the effectiveness of antibiotics. So, the bacteria can survive and continue to grow, strengthen and become untreatable.

The most important way to reduce or prevent antibiotic resistance is by consulting with the doctor before taking any antibiotics or you just simply take a rest and drink more water if you have a fever, cough, stuffy nose, or the flu. These basic steps of healthcare will help you fight the viruses with no need of any antibiotics or what we call “Antibiotics Smart Uses”.
