Successful Kidney Transplant Journey

12 Years of Living as a Kidney Transplant Transplant Patient from a Living Donor

Mr. Abid underwent a kidney transplant 12 years ago when his kidneys ceased to function. Faced with the choice between dialysis and a kidney transplant, Mr. Abid went for the transplant immediately, avoiding the potential complications of dialysis.

From a successful experience in a kidney transplant

Mr. Rashid’s Suffering with Kidney Failure:
Like many kidney failure patients, Mr. Rashid suffered from unpleasant symptoms such as swollen legs and toxins in his blood, which led him to visit several doctors in search of the best treatment.

When Hope Returns Life After a Kidney Transplant

I had been living with kidney disease for many years, until my kidney function dropped to just 5% I wasn’t aware of it. At first, I was stubborn and refused to undergo dialysis for nearly two years. Eventually, my body could no longer cope, and I decided to see a doctor to receive proper treatment.

Can End-Stage Kidney Failure Really Be Cured? Discover Real-Life Patient Story

It has been almost a year and a half since the days when I had to spend 12 hours a week on dialysis. Today, I spend that same amount of time exercising and living my life freely.

A Life Renewed After a Kidney Transplant

Ms. Patcharin, 64, had been living with kidney disease and undergoing continuous dialysis for more than 10 years. Physical discomfort, persistent fatigue, and wounds on her feet had become part of her daily life. Her children were determined to give their mother a better chance at improved health and quality of life, so they encouraged her to seek further treatment. She ultimately decided to undergo a kidney transplant under the care of medical team at Vejthani International Hospital.

Age Is Not a Barrier to a New Life Freedom from Dialysis After a Kidney Transplant

“I learned that I had kidney disease during a routine health checkup,” the doctor told me. “You have chronic kidney disease.” I then had to undergo dialysis for 13 years, three times a week. My family and I held onto the hope that one day, a kidney transplant would be possible.

Kidney Transplant A New Chance at Life Without Lifelong Dialysis

I would like Vejthani Hospital to be the first choice for anyone considering a kidney transplant. Everything that was lost during years of dialysis and waiting for a donor kidney can be regained. What ultimately led me to choose to undergo my kidney transplant here was my trust in the medical team…

A New Life After Kidney Transplantation Freedom from Lifelong Dialysis

Today is the day I have been waiting for. Because a kidney transplant allows us to live a better life without spending four hours a day traveling for dialysis, three times a week. Dialysis had caused us to miss many opportunities in life. After receiving a kidney transplant…

Kidney Transplantation A New Life Option Without Lifelong Dialysis

Life for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease does not have to end with lifelong dialysis. A new chapter can begin again through kidney transplantation, provided by a multidisciplinary medical team at the Kidney Transplant Center, Vejthani Hospital

A New Beginning Through Kidney Transplantation

When I learned that I had end-stage kidney disease, I honestly couldn’t cope with it. I even had thoughts of ending my life. I was so afraid that I didn’t dare to think about a kidney transplant at all.
Every day, my daughter and son-in-law spoke to me, saying, “Mom, what are you waiting for? Right now, it’s as if you’re just waiting for death. If you decide to have a kidney transplant, you may have the chance to live long enough to see your grandchild ordained.”

When Kidney Disease Has No Cure Kidney Transplantation Becomes a New Hope

Previously, I had to undergo dialysis three times a week. It felt as though my life had come to a standstill, and I could no longer live a normal life. When I saw other patients coming in for dialysis, very few seemed to improve. Most of them gradually disappeared, one by one.
However, after receiving a kidney transplant, my health steadily began to improve. I became stronger over time and was able to enjoy a wider variety of foods again.

Ending the Suffering of Dialysis Through Kidney Transplantation

Who would have thought that at “such a young age,” I would reach the stage of end-stage kidney disease? Being so young yet having to undergo dialysis every week, when life once held so many more possibilities. Life for patients with end-stage kidney disease isn’t just about ‘dialysis’…

Changing a Kidney, Changing a Life From Patient to an Overseas Dream

Life for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease who must undergo dialysis for life often means losing opportunities, including the chance to work abroad. Dreams are put on hold, and daily life becomes limited. That changed when I was given the opportunity to receive proper treatment.

Multidisciplinary Teams

Vejthani International Hospital has established a Transplant Committee and an Ethics Committee to ensure that all kidney transplantation processes are conducted in full compliance with ethical principles, the regulations of the Medical Council of Thailand, and Thai law.

The hospital has extensive experience in caring for patients with chronic kidney failure requiring regular hemodialysis, as well as critically ill patients, through a highly skilled multidisciplinary team with expertise across multiple specialties.

Living Kidney Transplantation A Way to a Better Quality of Life

End-stage chronic kidney disease is a condition no one wishes to face, as it requires lifelong dialysis and can greatly affect daily life.
Living kidney transplantation is considered one of the most effective treatments, helping patients regain better health and an improved quality of life.

Discover Renal Function

Functions and Importance of Kidneys

Kidneys are bean-shaped organs located in the back of the abdominal cavity, at the same level as the lower back. The human body has two kidneys, one on each side, each about the size of a fist. The main function of the kidneys is to filter excess fluids and waste products generated by various organs from the body through urine. In addition to waste elimination, the kidneys perform several other vital functions, including:

  • Regulating the body’s water and electrolyte balance
  • Maintaining the body’s acid-base balance
  • Controlling blood pressure
  • Regulating vitamin D production, which helps maintain calcium and phosphorus balance and supports bone formation
  • Producing erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates red blood cell production
  • Regulating other hormones, such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and prostaglandins, which influence blood pressure control and inflammatory processes
Kidney failure is a condition in which the kidneys lose their ability to filter waste from the blood and cannot excrete waste through urine, causing waste to remain in the body. It also causes the levels of water, electrolytes, and various minerals in the body to be imbalanced, resulting in abnormal body function and being life-threatening if not treated promptly. Kidney failure has the following symptoms:

  • Swollen face, swollen legs
  • Decreased urination
  • Frequent urination at night
  • Foamy or bloody urine
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Breath that smells like urine
  1. Peritoneal dialysis is a procedure in which a catheter is permanently implanted in the abdomen and dialysis fluid is inserted into the abdomen to flush out waste products from the blood, while maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance. The solution needs to be changed 4 to 6 times a day. This procedure can be done at home but must be performed correctly to minimize the risk of infection.
  2. Hemodialysis is a procedure in which a patient’s blood is drawn from the body through a needle inserted into a blood vessel and connected to a machine. The machine filters the blood to remove waste and balance minerals, and then returns the purified blood back into the body. Each dialysis session takes about 4 hours, and patients typically need to undergo dialysis 2 to 3 times a week at the hospital.
  3. Kidney transplantation involves replacing a failing kidney with a healthy kidney from either a deceased or living donor. The new kidney is placed in the pelvis and connected to the patient’s bladder and blood vessels. After the surgery, the patient no longer requires dialysis. However, lifelong immunosuppressive medication is necessary to prevent the body from rejecting the new kidney, also known as kidney transplant rejection. This treatment is suitable for patients in good overall health, with a low risk of infection and no severe heart disease.

Living Donor Kidney Transplant

According to the criteria specified by Thai law, the kidney donor must be a relative with a direct blood relationship, such as a parent, sibling, child, grandchild, uncle, aunt, or spouse who has been married or lived together for more than 3 years. However, if the couple has children together, the three-year waiting period does not apply.

Kidney transplantation is the most effective treatment for end-stage chronic kidney failure. However, this treatment option does have some limitations. A joint treatment plan between the medical team and the patient is essential to maximize the benefits and ensure the safety of the patient.

  • Pros
  1. No need for dialysis or peritoneal dialysis
  2. Improved overall health
  3. No strict dietary and fluid restrictions
  4. Improved quality of life
  5. Ability to have children normally
  • Cons
  1. Surgical risks involved
  2. Lifelong need for immunosuppressant medications
  3. Increased risk of infections due to side effects of immunosuppressive drugs
  4. Potential risk of organ rejection
  1. The patient must have end-stage chronic kidney disease and receiving kidney replacement therapy.
  2. No history of infectious diseases that are contraindications, such as HIV, and no issues with substance abuse.
  3. Must be able to follow medical advice and attend regular follow-up appointments.
  4. Must accept and be able to cover the full costs of the kidney transplant procedure.
  5. If the patient has a history of cancer, they must have been fully treated and cancer-free for at least 2-5 years, depending on the type of cancer.
  6. .Must not have conditions that pose surgical risks, such as ischemic heart disease or heart failure.
  7. Must have normal mental health, as assessed by a psychiatrist before surgery.
