Pay Attention to Numbness Sensation

Numbness or tingling sensation cannot be avoided after a long working day. Staying at the same posture for long hours presses weight at certain parts of your body which causes numbness or pins-and–needles sensation. On the other hand, if it occurs more frequently and increases in severity over time, it may be a warning sign of a damaged nerve which can lead to paralysis if left untreated.

A come and go symptom like numbness could be a sign of a disorder if the feeling occurs on the following parts:

  • Thumb, index finger, middle finger and part of the ring finger: May result from the median nerve being pressed in the carpal tunnel.
  • Thumb, index finger, middle finger and painful sensation from hand to arm: The median nerve which runs into the palm of the hand is being pressed.
  • Tip of toe and fingertip: may be a symptom of peripheral neuropathy due to the deficiency of vitamins B1, B6 and B12.
  • Most of the fingertips numb: The tendon that bends the fingers has thickened or became swollen, pressing on the nerve.
  • Little finger, ring finger and side of the hand: May be caused by a compression of the median nerve in the elbow.
  • Purlicue (between thumb and index finger): Could be a result of compression causing neuropathy to the median nerve.
  • Numbness starting from the arm and down to the finger: occurs when a nerve in the upper arm is compressed.
  • Numbness starts from foot to hip: may be a sign of spinal herniated disc.

Muscles and Nerves ‘Numbness’ Examination

If the numbness does not go away in a week, you should seek for a medical advice before the condition gets worse.  The doctor may order several tests called Electrodiagnosis to diagnose your current condition and future treatment plan, the test also includes Electromyography: EMG and Nerve Conduction Study: NCS.

EMG/NCS Tests on Your Face, Arm and Leg

  • During the test, 4 electrode patches will be attached on your arm and 5 electrode patches on your legs depending on your condition.
  • Then the doctor will see how well your electrical signals are traveling through the nerves
  • Then, a thin needle is inserted into several muscles to see if there is any inflammation while the muscle is moving or being still.
  • The result of EMG/NCS will then be graphed out and interpret by a specialist.

An Electrodiagnosis provides a more beneficial detail than the common physical check-up.  The test can show the cause of your numbness condition whether it indicates Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Muscle Inflammation, Nerve Degeneration, or Myasthenia Gravis to have the most effective treatment plan.

When Should I Request The Electromyography Test?

  • If you feel numbness or tingling on your fingertips and tiptoes
  • If you feel neck pain and it goes down to your arm
  • Ff you feel back pain and it goes down to your leg

If you have a condition called Myasthenia Gravis
